KKR Financial Holdings is selling shares in an attempt to meet $3.5 billion in obligations to holders of its commercial paper. KKR invested in Alt-A loans (between prime and subprime), funding those purchases largely with commercial paper. When the commercial paper market dried up, KKR began restructuring debt, thereby explaining the current issue of equity.
